Empowering the next generation of Black engineers through academic excellence, professional development, and community impact at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
From humble beginnings to national impact - the journey of NSBE and our chapter through the decades.
In April 1975, NSBE was founded at Purdue University by Edward Barnette and Fred Cooper as the Black Society of Engineers (BSE) to address the high dropout rate of Black engineering students. This marked the beginning of a movement that would transform engineering education across America.
The first national meeting was held at the University of Illinois, officially establishing the National Society of Black Engineers. The iconic NSBE symbol with lightning bolts was chosen to represent members' burning desire for success and excellence in engineering.
NSBE was incorporated as a non-profit organization in Texas, with John Cason as the first elected president and Virginia Booth becoming the first female National Chairperson. This formalization enabled rapid expansion across universities nationwide.
The UTSA NSBE chapter was established, bringing the mission of academic excellence and professional development to the University of Texas at San Antonio engineering community. Our chapter began with a small group of dedicated students committed to making a difference.
Today, NSBE boasts over 31,000 members across 99 pre-college, 250 student, and 68 alumni chapters worldwide. Our UTSA chapter continues to grow and innovate, leading initiatives in technology, sustainability, and community engagement while maintaining our core mission of excellence.
